Brain tanned buckskin is one of the oldest ways of turning a hide into leather. The process is long and hard, as anyone who has done it will attest, but the outcome is far superior than any other leather. It is stronger than Carhartt yet softer than velvet.

Brain tanned leather is the best material for clothing, especially mountain man and mountain girl clothing. This type of buckskin is what native american dress and beadwork is made of: medicine pouches (if authentic), moccasins, leather bags, leather clothing, ect. are all made form brain tanned buckskin.

If you are wanting to make a buckskin shirt, dress, or jacket this is the best leather to use.

Brain tanning is a multi day process that comes with an upper body workout, but when you feel the softness of that finished hide, it is all worth it.  We would love to teach you this wonderful process and be there to witness that finished joy.

Got a Hide?
