Brain Tanning
In this three day class, we will take fresh deer hides and go through the traditional tanning process of learning how to turn them into leather without the use of dangerous chemicals. This is the same process that was used by Native Americans. Brain tanned buckskin is one of the oldest ways of turning a hide into leather. The process is long and hard, as anyone who has done it will attest, but the outcome is far superior than any other leather. It is stronger than Carhartt yet softer than velvet. Brain tanned leather is the best material for clothing, especially mountain man and mountain girl clothing. This type of buckskin is what Native American dress and beadwork is made of. All medicine pouches (if authentic), moccasins, leather bags, leather clothing, ect. are made form brain tanned buckskin as well. It is period correct for Rendezvous and Mountain Man Muzzleloader events.
Brain tanning is a multi-day process that comes with an upper body workout, but when you feel the softness of that finished hide, it is all worth it, as you walk away with your own buckskin.

Illumination: Lamp Making
Oil - Fat - Wax
As the days get shorter and dusk arrives earlier, try to imagine life before the light switch. The lights dim and flickering, casting dancing shadows along the walls. The room filled with the soft warm light of a little flame burning on a wick.
Whether we use these lamps for sentimental value, reliving the old times, or in times when the electricity is out, these lamps are a fun project to make and to learn. We will take old containers and transform them into working oil or fat lamps or wax candles. If you have a container in mind bring it along with you and renew it into a beautiful sentimental container that is also a source of light.
